Course Description

This course is for Officers who have recently completed their Cadetship sea period. It aims to consolidate acquired knowledge and develop further skills in preparation for their first appointment as a qualified Junior Officer. The course ensures confirmation of the requisite knowledge of the duties and responsibilities of any Junior Officer holding a COC. In addition, BSM’s Safety Management System, practical leadership and management techniques for the role of a Junior Officer are covered.

Course Content

Covers the following topics:

  • Roles and responsibilities of Junior Officers
  • Safety culture through clear understanding of BSM procedures, Policies and processes.
  • Core principles of Leadership & Management. Cultural Awareness and Mental wellbeing.
  • Maritime Resource Management learnings. Apply soft skills, effective communication and proper shipboard planning and organization
  • Usage and maintenance of safety and firefighting equipment.
  • Safe working practices on vessel operations especially during mooring, enclosed space entry and slinging and lifting operations.
  • Understanding Risk, Way of working, Duty of care.
  • Understanding Drug and Alcohol
  • Permit to work system
  • Learning from Incidents.
  • Shipboard Bridge and Engine Watchkeeping.
  • Environmental initiatives and sustainability programs of BSM.
  • SMART maintenance systems.
Entry Standards

Holder of Officer in Charge of a Watch (OIC) or equivalent COC.

Facilities

Classroom, workshop facility, practical exercise areas, bridge and engine simulators.

Teaching Method

Instructor led Classroom lectures and practical exercises.

Guidelines

STCW Table A-II/1 and A-III/1. IMO Conventions and BSM QDMS Policies and Procedures.

Assessment

Ongoing assessments and final examination.
