Course Description

This course aims to support the smooth transition of officers from an operational level to management level officer. It provides training to further enhance the understanding and application of industry best practices and BSM procedures. The course further aims to develop leadership and management skills as well as enhance organizational effectiveness covering resource management methods, teamwork and leadership including appraisal and mentoring-teaching techniques.

This course also includes a post-course on board evaluation. The course helps improve on board safety and builds loyalty for the company and improves overall efficiency of human element onboard.

Course Content

On successful completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the role and responsibilities of Management level Officers
  • Carry out the roles of the On-Board Training Officer and Mentoring, Safety Officer and Environmental Officer when required
  • Apply enhanced leadership and management skills
  • Demonstrate knowledge through practical exercises in bridge and engine simulators
  • Demonstrate enhanced knowledge of fire fighting and safety equipment
  • Apply a strong safety and ‘Just Culture’ through clear understanding of BSM policies, procedures and processes
  • Understanding Risk, Way of working, Duty of care.
  • Implementation of Drug and Alcohol and Permit to work system
  • Deliver more efficient and effective ship operations
Entry Standards

Second Officers or Third Engineers holding Management Level COC, before promotion to Chief Officer or Second Engineer positions. Also available for existing Chief Officers or Second Engineers at the request of an SMC.

Classroom lectures, Case Studies, Practical performances and Activity individual outputs.

Assessment

Ongoing assessment of Each candidate’s attitude and behaviors will be evaluated throughout the course. Written, Activity performance, final examination / evaluation.
