Course Description

This course is aimed at Senior Officers (Deck and Engineering) and any person with immediate responsibility for the loading, discharging, care in transit, handling of cargo, tank cleaning or other cargo-related operations on chemical tankers and is a mandatory requirement under STCW Table A-V/1-1-1.

Course Content

On successful completion of this course, delegates will be able to:

  • Recognize types of chemical tanker design and equipment
  • Contribute to the safe cargo operations of chemical tankers including the segregation of cargoes
  • Take precautions to prevent hazards during tank cleaning, purging, gas freeing and inerting
  • Understand the relationship between pressure and temperature
  • Apply occupational health and safety precautions and measures including chemical symbols
  • Understand the risks of corrosion, reactivity, toxicity and vapour leaks
  • Respond to emergencies including explosion and flammability
  • Apply pollution prevention and protection of the environment
  • Carry out firefighting operations (Practical Exercises)
Entry Standards

Hold a Basic Chemical Tanker Cargo Operations certificate and have completed a minimum of at least 3 months of seagoing service on chemical tankers or have at least 1 month of approved onboard training on chemical tankers in a supernumerary capacity which includes at least 3 loading and 3 discharging operations documented in an approved training record book.
