Course Description

The aim of this course is to develop an understanding of the chemical and physical properties of crude oil and its products leading to an appreciation of hazards involved in cargo handling.

The course is a practical one and consists of a series of exercises structured around the operation of the cargo and ballast installation of an oil tanker.

Course Content

The trainees who successfully complete the course will make a safer and more effective contribution to the operation and control of the cargo and ballast installation of an oil tanker, In particular, there will be:

  • a greater awareness of the need for proper pre-planning, the use of checklists and the time scales involved in the various cargo handling operations
  • An understanding of the need for segregating these cargoes and the dangers when
  • handling (Loading, unloading and Tank cleaning) these hazardous cargoes.
  • Better understanding of Decision making and troubleshooting.
  • A greater understanding of efficient cargo operation keeping procedures and teamwork during watchkeeping and cargo handling, in normal and emergency situations.

Entry Standards

Second Mate (F.G.) or NCV or Mate or Master Certificate of Competency in addition to TASCO Certificate
