BSM’s Mentorship Programme is designed to guide, support and empower the cadets in the effort to build a more qualified, resilient and sustainable workforce of the future.

As the maritime industry faces a growing need to attract and retain qualified seafarers, Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement is committed to empowering the next generation of seafarers with BSM’s Mentorship Programme. Originally designed for our fresh female cadets, this programme provided an essential support system and a safe space where they could openly share their experiences and raise concerns. Recognising the importance of inclusivity and diversity within our maritime workforce, we are excited to extend this initiative to all BSM cadets.

Under the expanded BSM Mentorship Programme, each cadet approved to join a BSM fully managed vessel will be assigned a shore-based BSM mentor to ensure that our cadets receive continuous guidance and support throughout their journey. This mentor-mentee relationship is crucial in helping cadets navigate the unique challenges they may face, boosting their confidence and promoting a more inclusive work environment.

Eva Rodriguez, BSM's Director HR Marine, talks about the decision to extend the Mentorship Programme to all BSM cadets, “I still remember my first encounter with the concept of mentorship. That experience ignited a lifelong passion for developing others. Mentorship is not just about mastering skills and knowledge; it's about shaping character, values, self-awareness, empathy, and respect. The expansion of the Mentorship Programme to all BSM cadets aligns with our commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.”

The mentors are experienced maritime professionals who are passionate about sharing their knowledge and expertise. They are committed to maintaining regular contact with their mentees, providing advice, and listening to any concerns or experiences the cadets wish to share. The Mentorship Programme has been very well-received and has had positive impacts on the mentees. Initial feedback from participants highlights the significance of this initiative in addressing the unique challenges faced onboard vessels and providing invaluable support.
