Babcock Schulte Energy (BSE), a 50:50 joint venture between Babcock and Bernhard Schulte, celebrated on October 16, 2018, the completion of their ‘first of its kind’ and the world’s largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunker supply vessel, ‘M.V. Kairos’. This achievement follows the success in meeting a series of critical milestones after the initial ship award in December 2016 and highlights the strength of the relationship between the two organisations.

A major point in any shipbuilding project, the first cut of steel was completed in November 2017 at the Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in Ulsan, South Korea. With multiple teams being involved to meet exact plans and specifications, this was completed on time and to plan. In early 2018, the keel was laid and the 7,500m³ Gas Supply Vessel (GSV) began to take shape.

The GSV is time chartered to Nauticor and will be deployed to the Baltic region servicing a number of customers, including the Linde/AGA terminal in Nynäshamn and the Klaipėda LNG-fuelling station in Lithuania. Capable of performing both ship-to-ship bunkering and transshipment operations, she will be used for the LNG fuelling of vessels including ferries, containers, cruise ships and other shore-based gas consumers.

Equipped with Babcock’s Fuel Gas Supply Vessel Zero (FGSV0™) technology, a scalable cargo handling and fuelling solution complete with compressed natural gas storage and utilization capabilities, Kairos will eliminate the release of boil-off and flash gas to the atmosphere during normal operations providing an environmentally responsible shipping alternative. The innovative FGSV0™ enables significant reductions in emissions and offers beneficial environmental footprint savings.

Kairos has a state-of-the art design and several unique features, including a ballast-free design, easily deployable pneumatic fenders, high maneuverability due to azimuth thrusters and a novel Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) system to store vapor return gas from customer vessels.

The successful delivery could not have been done without the strong support of Schulte Marine Concept, who oversaw the plan approval and site supervision as well as BSM Germany, who arranged the timely attendance of a well-trained and enthusiastic crew.

Upgrade of SOV capacities

On 4 February 2023, BSM managed Service Operation Vessel (SOV) “Windea Leibniz” finished an extensive upgrade at Ulstein Shipyard in Norway. With an increase of cabins from 60 to over 80, the vessel has transitioned from an SOV to a Commissioning Service Operation Vessel (CSOV). Additionally, the ship received one extra pedestal on the stern for Baltic Sea operations to complement the existing pedestal for North Sea use. The upgrade expands the operational range of “Windea Leibniz” and makes her even more attractive for the offshore market.

Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM) and the Norwegian ammonia specialist Amon Maritime have announced the creation of a 50/50 joint venture “Ula Ship Management” during Nor-Shipping in Oslo. The joint venture, which will be based in Sandefjord in southern Norway, aims to offer ship management services for the Norwegian market, specialising in ammonia-powered vessels, but open to all types of ships.
