“To achieve your goals, you must always trust yourself"

“I belong to Peru and during my high school, I was inspired by a female marine engineer who visited our school to talk about the experience of being a sailor and since then I aspired to pursue a career at sea, despite the challenges that may come my way in the path.

In 2024, BSM opened its doors to me, allowing me to enroll in their cadet programme in Cyprus. The experience was extraordinary, their state-of-the-art equipment, experienced trainers and top-notch infrastructure prepared me for life at sea.

After beginning my career on a bulk cargo vessel, I joined BSM as an engine cadet on a container ship. Their comprehensive cadet programme onboard, including an e-logbook system, helped me gain extensive knowledge and hands-on experience. The engine department’s guidance and the crew's respect and kindness made me feel valued and welcomed as a female crew member every step of the way.

Thanks to BSM’s unwavering support, I completed my internship, obtained my license, and now can serve as an apprentice engineer, steadily working toward my goal of becoming a chief engineer.

I would encourage all female seafarers to overcome their apprehensions about joining the engine department. With determination, dedication, and a passion for your work, you can achieve anything. At BSM, you’ll find the respect and encouragement needed to succeed in this demanding yet rewarding career."

“Growing up in a family of seafarers in Odessa, from childhood, I couldn't envision any other path for myself than connecting my life with the sea. With a passion for working with my hands and solving technical problems, I chose to pursue a career as an engineer.

My journey with Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM) began during my second year at university when I needed to find a place for my cadetship. BSM is known for its robust selection process, and securing a position was highly competitive. However, I performed very well and was able to secure my first opportunity to join as a cadet on an LPG vessel. My first voyage was particularly valuable, as the vessel was in dry dock, allowing me to gain practical experience early in my career.

After completing my first contract, I transitioned to container vessels. For over a decade, I worked on container ships, steadily climbing the career ladder. However, my aspiration to return to gas carriers motivated me, not only for the specialised knowledge but also for the financial benefits associated with this sector.

After ten years, I finally made the transition back to an LPG vessel, although it required accepting a downward shift in rank. This was a difficult decision, but I quickly regained my position as I worked hard to prove my skills. I am grateful to BSM for providing this opportunity and for their unwavering support throughout my journey.

In my opinion, BSM actively supports professional growth and individual ambitions. Whether it's transitioning between vessel types, advancing in your career, or moving to a shore-based role, BSM provides opportunities that align with each person's goals. Another significant advantage for me is the company's emphasis on selecting well-qualified crews. A strong crew fosters a supportive and positive environment on board, which I greatly value. The people around you can make all the difference—any challenge can be overcome when working with true professionals, especially during the early stages of a career. Having strong mentors on board as a cadet or junior officer is crucial for future success.

To those dreaming of building a career at sea, my advice is to always strive for new knowledge, seize opportunities, and never stop progressing. Don’t fear difficulties and setbacks; they happen to everyone. Mistakes are part of the learning process, and determination is key to achieving your goals. Knock on doors, and sooner or later, they will open.”

"My decision to become a seafarer was deeply influenced by my family, particularly my father, who was also a seafarer. Growing up around ships and seeing my father’s dedication to his work left a lasting impression on me. Whenever his vessels visited our home city, I was fascinated by the lifestyle and the adventures that came with life at sea. This early exposure sparked a passion in me that has guided my journey ever since.

Over the past 13 years, my career as a seafarer has been immensely rewarding. Starting as a cadet, I embraced every opportunity to learn and grow. I absorbed as much knowledge as I could, and this foundation allowed me to rise through the ranks to become an officer. Each step has presented new challenges and learning experiences, and I’m grateful for the support and mentorship I received along the way.

BSM has played a pivotal role in my development. The company provides a supportive environment that fosters teamwork, professionalism, and career advancement. Through its training programs and strong emphasis on mentorship, BSM ensures that seafarers like me are equipped to thrive in their roles. The focus on safety, innovation, and crew well-being creates a fulfilling workplace and sets BSM apart as a leader in the maritime industry.

To aspiring seafarers, my advice is to embrace the journey with curiosity and determination. The maritime industry is vast and constantly evolving, so adaptability and a willingness to learn are essential. Every experience, no matter how small, contributes to your growth. Seafaring offers incredible opportunities to explore the world, forge meaningful connections, and build a fulfilling career. Stay passionate and committed, and you’ll find that your efforts will open doors to a world of possibilities.

BSM has been instrumental in shaping my career, and I’m proud to be part of an organisation that invests in its people. For anyone considering a career at sea, BSM is the perfect place to start your journey and achieve your goals."

“My journey as a seafarer began in Portugal, a country renowned for its rich maritime heritage, filled with stories of daring explorers and uncharted adventures. Coming from a family with several generations of seafarers, I was naturally curious about life at sea and decided to follow in their footsteps. It turned out to be the best decision of my life. From my first days at the Nautical School, I realised this career was not just about sailing—it was a profound life lesson.

I joined BSM in 1997 as an engine cadet, working primarily on Crude Oil Tankers and gaining valuable experience with Chemical and Product Tankers. After nine years at sea and earning my Second Engineer License, life took an unexpected turn due to a family situation. I transitioned to a shore-based role at CSC Venezuela, initially as a temporary measure. That 'temporary' role lasted five and a half years, during which I progressed from FPO to Operations Manager.

My career continued to evolve, leading me to Hamburg in 2012, where my career advanced further to Fleet Personnel Manager. In 2022, a new opportunity arose in Group HR Marine, and I was thrilled to be selected as HR Marine General Manager for Placement & Management.

Looking back over my 28 years with BSM, I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities and support that have shaped my career. BSM, part of the Schulte Group, is a remarkable organisation offering countless pathways for growth and development. Whether at sea or ashore, BSM ensures you can thrive in roles that maximise your skills while making you feel valued and happy.

To aspiring seafarers, I would like to say that while maritime life requires dedication and sacrifice, but those sacrifices are not in vain. They teach you resilience, provide invaluable learning opportunities, and offer rewards that extend beyond the professional realm to your personal life. My advice to you is to seize every learning moment, work safely, and always strive to make the most of this unique career. Your family, who shares in your sacrifices, will cherish the moments you can return home to share the rewards of your hard work.”
